Wegovy is a brand-name version of the generic medication semaglutide, which is a type of medication called a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist. Instead of that tongue-twister of a name, we call these medications “GLP-1s” for short.
Wegovy is FDA-approved and clinically proven to help with weight loss. How? It acts like a natural hormone your body uses to regulate blood sugar and appetite—key steps in resetting your biological set point to help you maintain a new, lower weight. In fact, the STEP 4 clinical trial saw people who combined Wegovy with lifestyle changes lose an average of 10.6% of their body weight after 20 weeks, and 17% after 68 weeks.
Wegovy works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which regulates appetite and blood sugar levels. It helps reduce hunger and prolongs the feeling of fullness, leading to decreased calorie intake. By slowing down gastric emptying and enhancing insulin release, Wegovy aids in weight loss and helps control blood sugar levels in individuals with obesity or overweight conditions.

WEGOVY® (semaglutide) injection 2.4 mg is an injectable prescription medicine used with a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity:
Yes, Wegovy® is the same as Ozempic® in many ways: Both are the brand (trade) names of the medication semaglutide, a GLP1-receptor agonist. However, there are two major differences: the FDA-indication and the dosing. Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss while Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes. The dosing of Wegovy and Ozempic are similar, but the maximum dose of Wegovy is 2.4 mg compared to 2 mg of Ozempic. Soon after Wegovy came on the market, there were issues with the medication’s supply, and many patients were unable to continue taking or even start the medication. As a result, Ozempic more recently has been used as a Wegovy alternative for weight loss while Wegovy is not in stock.
The most common side effects of Wegovy® may include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach (abdomen) pain, headache, tiredness (fatigue), upset stomach, dizziness, feeling bloated, belching, low blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, gas, stomach flu, heartburn, and runny nose or sore throat.

Wegovy® works by mimicking a hormone that targets areas of the brain involved in regulating appetite and food intake. This can help you eat less, which can lead to weight loss.
The amount of weight per week one loses on Wegovy® will vary from one patient to the next. Importantly, Wegovy is used in combination with lifestyle changes such as a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity to promote weight loss. In this study, people lost on average about 6% of their starting weight by 12 weeks, about 10% by 20 weeks, and about 15% by one year (a little more than 0.5 lb per week). Importantly, when starting a Wegovy prescription, patients begin at the lowest dose (0.25 mg weekly) and gradually increase every four weeks to a maximum dose of 2.4 mg weekly as long as the medication is well tolerated. For some patients, weight loss may not start until they reach a higher dose of the medication.
It is possible to travel with your Wegovy® pen.
